Based on the above, another of Tosfos’ questions on the sugya can be answered. Along the way a second answer – from a mussar perspective – can be suggested to Tosfos’ second question. This drasha is well-liked by Bar Mitzva boys. It is relatively easy and brings “chedvesa d’Oraisa – a feeling of enjoyment” when they appreciate the crux of the answer. This is aside from the strong chinnuch message that this drasha contains, of avoiding hesech ha’da’as (distraction) and any issurim. It also contains a further chinnuch message that a person should rid himself of averos before putting on tefillin. Warmly recommended!
